DONLab

Overview

The DONLab was started in 1992 as a part of the TeNeT Group of IIT-Madras.

Goal :

Its goal is the development of technologies and products that serve the communications needs of large segments of Indian society. Such products need to be inexpensive, with support for local languages and speech interfaces, and be globally competitive.

Products that have emerged from these efforts include:

  • The corDECT wireless in local loop system
  • The ExcelSwitch family of low-cost Ethernet switches and remotebridges
  • The NovaSwitch high-performance Ethernet switch
  • The CygNet network management system for large telecom networks providing voice+Internet service
  • The CygPlan planning tool for access networks based on Tenet Group products
  • LAN-T, an educational kit for hands-on training in local area networks
  • Tamil and Malayalam support for the Linux OS
  • VML, a portable language for signal processing algorithms that allows a program written to run efficiently on any DSP

Research activities are also oriented towards these goals and include:

  • Applications of signal processing algorithms for speech recognition and network traffic prediction;
  • Efficient design of network protocols.

Besides project students and research scholars, the lab has about 15 full-time project staff.
