HP World e-inclusion
- IITM TeNeT Program
Objective
To install
at least 500 telephone and Internet connections in Poondi, Ellapuram,
Thiruvallur and Kodampathur Taluks of Thiruvallur district near Chennai,
make it sustainable and develop business around them.
Agenda
- Study
the applications that are needed to make each connection sustainable
and profitable.
- Study
what people are willing to pay for, and get content developed appropriately
- Study
how this experiment can be scaled up rapidly in India and outside India
- Understand
the role of a local player to enable this to happen.
- Introduce
some of the equipments of HP as and when possible
Methodology
HP and IITM
will get n-Logue to execute the project on a commercial basis. It will
also partner with EID Parry to provide some local content. The following
was discussed.
- HP will
budget $30K for Third Party Content Developers. Small sums will be paid
to a few developers who will develop relevant content.
- HP would
provide $25K towards installation of Access Centre. This would subsidise
a Local Service Provider (LSP), who will be charged at most Rs.2.0 lakhs.
- HP would
work with TeNeT Group of IITM to make financing available for about
500 kiosks in the area. The financing would be available through banks
or some micro finance organisation. Since each kiosk costs between Rs.35
to 40K, the total amount involved may be of the order of $375K. It was
felt that HP should budget a sum of $70 to 75K towards this.
- HP will
have a full time person co-ordinating the project. It will also do the
needful for evaluating the exercise.
- TeNeT
Group of IIT Madras and HP World e-inclusion will sign a MoU soon and
announcement may be made by the CEO of HP during her visit to India
in April 2001.
