Softswitch
is a ubiquitous term that is used in the VoIP world to represent
the switching point for VoIP calls. Usually the Softswitch does
not handle the media; the Media Gateways in turn handle the Media
Conversion from IP to any Circuit Switched Networks like PSTN, PLMN
(GSM/CDMA), etc. Before we get on to the deployment scenarios of
Softswitches, we can have a very brief look at the Protocols involved
the VoIP framework. There are two types of protocols that are involved
in VoIP. H.323 and SIP are peer-to-peer protocols, while MGCP and
MEGACO are master-slave protocols. Other than these, there is a
SIGTRAN protocol suite for taking SS7 signaling over IP. H.323 is
an umbrella recommendation from ITU-T for multimedia communication
over packet networks.

The
project aims at developing 802.11b/g based mesh network for rural
communities. This design emphasizes the development of stand-alone
802.11b/g Multiport Wireless Access System (MWAS) and planning of an effective mesh network
using theses cards. Each of the above mentioned router cards have
three 802.11b/g based Wireless standalonecards and an Ethernet port for linking
backhaul. The directional antennas connected to the wireless cards
facilitate long links of the order of a few Kilometers while the
Ethernet provides the link to the Fibre backbone.

The
Gramateller is an ATM designed to enable a low-cost
model of delivering banking services in rural areas. While conventional
ATMs are meant to be a value-added service provided by a bank, the
Gramateller is designed to be a virtual bank in areas
where a bank has no other presence. This opens up large vistas for
a bank to expand its operations profitably.

TeNeT Group and Neurosynaptic have developed an affordable telemedicine
solution, which includes a Remote Diagnostic Kit developed by Neurosynaptic.
The kit can be installed at villages and other remote locations,
which have Internet connectivity. The doctor, who is present in
a different location (maybe in a city), and the patient at the remote
location, are connected to each other over a video conferencing
link.

The
focus of the Online Tutorials is to enable rural students to pass
examinations. Active teaching and learning strategies have been
used in these tutorials. The highlight of the tutorial is the use
of the Question and Answer format. This problem-solving approach
is evident in its three-pronged format: Learn, Practice and Evaluate.

Although
India's average literacy level is about 65%, less than 5% of India's
population can use English for communication. And even though the
world wide web and computer communication has given us access to
information at the click of a mouse, 95% of our population is excluded
from this revolution due to dominance of English.

Rural
Services
The
rural services initiatives is a range of services where the urban
buyer pays for the skills of a rural producer. The Chiraag Kiosk
operator plays the role of facilitator, enabling the buyer to interact
with remote villages almost without ever having to travel physically
to the place.
Several initiatives are being explored, that can be classified as
Rural Crafts and Rural IT Enabled Services.
